- A social expert involving a blind man was done in the streets of Metro Manila.
- The “blind man” asked people to change his 20 peso bill into coins.
- How many people took advantage of the situation?
A lot of people with disabilities were taken advantage by a lot of people. Many of us think of people with disabilities as fragile one who always need the help of other people. Unfortunately, with the kind of society that everyone is moving right now, it is easy for people to deceive those who have disabilities.
The Social Experiment
KAMI conducted a social experiment involving a person with a physical disability and if people will take advantage of him.
This social experiment involved an actor, who dressed up as a blind man, asking strangers and passerby for help. Whenever someone goes up to him and ask what help he needs, he handed them a 50 peso (US$1) bill, asking them to break down his 20 peso bill into smaller bills or coins.
Little did these people know that the “blind” man is not really blind and he is very much aware of what is happening around.
Did the strangers hand him the correct amount or they pretended that got a 20 peso bill from the blind man?
He asked the first man.
Pabarya po tong 20 ko.
The man immediately corrected him, saying that he handed him a 50 peso bill. He immediately came back with coins worth 50 pesos.
Sampung tigpi-piso, samsung tigpi-piso ah. Apat na tiglilima, isang bente.
The man clearly explained for the blind man to understand.
The first person was very helpful to the blind. He did not only corrected him that the money he’s giving is actually a 50 peso bill, he also made the effort to change his money.
However, the next person is not as kind and humane as the first one.
He also asked the same question and she instantly reached into her pocket and gave him some coins. Without saying anything, she just placed the bill from the blind man into her pocket and walked away. Upon checking, the coins she handed to the blind man was only 17 pesos.
Other Shocking Results
The other strangers were very honest about the amount that he is holding. Some told him that their coins are not enough. A group even took him to a safer place when the place he’s standing at is quite dangerous.
Another stranger passed by the actor and he tried asking for a smaller bill again.
Papabaryahan ko po sana ‘tong 20 pesos ko.
Sige sige, may tindahan dorn eh, papalitan ko lang.
The stranger quickly crossed the street and left the blind man. However, he did not come back anymore.
Some people thought that they can easily fool a blind man. The social experiment clearly teaches everyone a lesson: “Integrity is doing the right thing.”
